Both fires were, at the time of each, the state record for acres burned. Not an enviable "honor." Unfortunately, both records have been far exceeded by fires elsewhere in the state.

Nature sometimes has to be harsh to teach her lessons. After all, humans set up the conditions for these disasters by supressing fires for the better part of the 20th century. We have now learned that fires are necessary to the health of forests.

I just wish I could see a healthy, green pine forest when I look up at the mountains around town. It saddens me to know that the forests won't regrow during my lifetime.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7453652992620348357.post-45228223108109892762013-06-05T05:19:45.291-06:002013-06-05T05:19:45.291-06:00Yes, it did. I was just a kid who loved to go stay the summer in places like Tucson, Arizona and then try to work my way back home to Ohio either hitchhiking or going along with a group of people trying to sell things along the way. Went all the way to Houston in 1952 on one of my sojourns home to Ohio.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7453652992620348357.post-59926644681942109162012-12-18T12:56:00.719-07:002012-12-18T12:56:00.719-07:00A terrific winter scene!A terrific winter scene!Katehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09223040482420514208noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7453652992620348357.post-5672136150043452932012-12-12T13:03:00.320-07:002012-12-12T13:03:00.320-07:00Cool photo, and the explanation of why it turns th...Cool photo, and the explanation of why it turns this way too. The less common entrances are difficult to find and access. A back tunnel within the cave dead ends in the middle of a basalt cliff overlooking the rio grande. There are also multiple caves that are mistaken for the entrance due to the amount of graffitti marking the routes. The cave itself has a roof of boulders held together just by gravity, if you are loud enough they will shift causing a slight rumble above and around you. The large room and "rubble" room are very large but the entrances are barely large enough to squeeze through. Neat adventure but sketchy at best, especially if tight spaces bother you.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7453652992620348357.post-11565644747927572652012-09-03T19:15:28.630-06:002012-09-03T19:15:28.630-06:00Fab shot!Fab shot!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7453652992620348357.post-22221580842466084022012-09-03T16:55:27.526-06:002012-09-03T16:55:27.526-06:00From Kyle Wheeler:

Check out the book, ‘Just Crazy to Ski,’ by Deanna Kirby. The person who took this photo would not claim it for many years because the fact that Bohr was in Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project was a big secret, and the photographer was worried he would be subject to penalties for taking this picture. It is another interesting part of our local history. Sawyer's Hill was not a good spot for skiing: it was too low, too exposed to the sun, etc. When skiers realized how much more snow Pajarito Mountain gets, they hustled over there and built the mountain we have enjoyed since 1957.”Reidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08333620731032757356noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7453652992620348357.post-91825390831478738472012-09-01T10:36:29.046-06:002012-09-01T10:36:29.046-06:00It's always sad when local businesses go away,...It's always sad when local businesses go away, but I guess a lot of times it's our own fault for supporting the big stores instead.
