Evening at Ashley Pond after the Las Conchas Fire

Steve Tenbrink
Steve writes: “I took this at Ashley Pond soon after we were allowed back in town after the Las Conchas Fire in 2011. Note the smoke still hovering over the mountains and the sun shining through the smoke. It felt surreal.” July 6, 2011.

Ed. note: A related interesting tidbit is this. If you open up Google Earth, choose the imagery timeline, and choose the July 2011 imagery (the most recent at the time of this writing), you can actually see smoke and flames from the Las Conchas Fire in the mountains northwest of town.

Be aware of weather conditions

Hi folks,

Quick update today. There is a new submission method: just fill out this web form. I expect the new method to be much simpler for everyone involved.

Thanks, and please keep your wonderful photos coming!

Zebra mountains and a program note

Hi folks,

We’re a couple of weeks into the new Los Alamos Daily Photo. I’m having a lot of fun with this project, and I hope you are too. I especially like when folks write in the comments to say that they enjoy a given photo.

I think the new blog is going pretty well, but more important is what you, the reader, thinks about it. What do you like about it? How could I improve it? Let me know in the comments.

My goal with this blog is to tell the story of what Los Alamos is like, and how it fits into the world, using photography — and the more different people send in photos, the better I can do this. I know that each one of you has a unique story that no one else can tell, and I’d love to include a little bit of that story in this blog. Details are in “Submit your photos” above, but the logistics of submitting a photo are pretty straightforward:

E-mail losalamosdailyphoto@gmail.com with your JPEG photo attached, one photo per e-mail, full-resolution if possible. Please copy and paste the following form and include it in your e-mail:
  • Name: Whatever name you’d like to be credited as.
  • Source: Who took the photo? (If not you, ensure you have permission to submit it.)
  • Location: Where was the photo taken?
  • Date: When was the photo taken?
  • Caption: A couple of sentences to a paragraph about the photo.
Please tell your friends about LADP, and keep sending in your great photos!

Your editor,

Reid

White snow on black rocks

This rock pit is to the right of the Red Dot Trail. I assume that this sort of thing is caused by the same block slumping process that creates the lava hills and meadows in White Rock Canyon. December 2011.
